Throughout time, scholars of various Islamic sciences used technical terminologies in their works. Scholars from all four law schools wrote numerous works on legal terminologies (al-muştalabat al-fiqhiyya) and on idioms of their jurists (lughat al-fuqaha). This book presents a translation of 'Ali b. Muhammad al-Hindi's (d. 1419/1998) Muqaddimat fi bayan al-mustalahat al-fiqhiyya on Hanbali fiqh terminologies. The work furthermore serves as a Hanbali biographical dictionary (tabagat) and a historical document which shows how the scholars of different generations determined the 'official' opinions for the Hanbali school. It is hoped the translation, An Overview of Hanbali Terms, Scholars, and Works helps one to understand basic legal terms, and appreciate the immense contributions of the past scholars. It is the first time a work of this sort is being presented to the English readers. This bilingual edition with its parallel Arabic text will allow readers to easily access the original Arabic and hopefully help with vocabulary building, oracy, and future translations. An addendum titled, The Later-Generation and the development of the Mu'ramad opinions has been included to shed further light on the concept of 'official' opinions among the later-generation Hanbali scholars.
